Just say no!

It's spring cleaning time! Don't forget to tackle the medicine cabinet. But before you do, please take a look at these handy rules:

Taken from SMARxT DISPOSAL (a project from the US Fish & Wildlife Service, APhA, and PhRMA)

  • DO NOT FLUSH unused medications and

  • DO NOT POUR them down a sink or drain.

  • Be Proactive and Dispose of Unused Medication In Household Trash.

  • When discarding unused medications, ensure you protect children and pets from potentially negative effects:

  • Pour medication into a sealable plastic bag. If medication is a solid (pill, liquid capsule, etc.), crush it or add water to dissolve it.

  • Add kitty litter, sawdust, coffee grounds (or any material that mixes with the medication and makes it less appealing for pets and children to eat) to the plastic bag.

  • Seal the plastic bag and put it in the trash.

  • Remove and destroy ALL identifying personal information (prescription label) from all medication containers before recycling them or throwing them away.

  • Another option is to check for approved state and local collection alternatives such as community based household hazardous waste collection programs. In certain states, you may be able to take your unused medications to your community pharmacy or other location for disposal.

  • Consult your pharmacist with any questions.

Earth Day Scavenger Hunt!

Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Pull out your digital cameras (or cell phone cameras)! Let's have some fun this Earth Day!
Do it by yourself, or grab a buddy- take pictures of yourselves doing as many of the following tasks as possible.
You can break them up, or try to do them together.
You have from this very moment until 7pm on Tuesday to complete these tasks.

*I will be participating in this hunt with a group of my dearest friends. Please form your own group and let me know how it goes! Email me pictures and stories and I would love to share them! Good luck!

1. Fill one grocery-size bag of litter. (You must bring the bag with you.)

2. Take a collection of plastic bags to a recycling center (in a grocery store most often).

3. Collect 10 soda can tabs.

4. Take public transportation.

5. If you're going to buy lunch, bring a tupperware container and try to get them to put your food in it instead of using their styrofoam or plastic containers.

6. Bring a bag of unwanted clothes to a donation center.

7. Collect unwanted cellphones. (And bring them to me!)

8. Find a reason to play in the dirt. (Plant something, weed something, or make a mud pie.)

9. Hug a tree. Or two.

10. Walk barefoot through a grassy field (or patch for you city folks out there).

11. Post the attached sign in a store/deli of your choice (with their permission of course).

12. Wear something organic! Put a flower in your hair, wear earthy colors, or put on that organic cotton t-shirt that you love so much!

13. Feed an animal (besides yourself) example: birds, dogs, cats

14. Water a plant or two!

15. Learn something new about your world and share it with us! (i.e news report, magazine story, scientific experiment)

16. Take pictures of 10 recycling receptacles within a 4 block radius of where you work.

17. Play frisbee.

18. Thank 5 people you see doing something green. Take their pictures if they let you.

19. "Click to donate"

20. Donate your hair to Locks for Love.

21. Say no to junk mail!

22. Make something beautiful out of "trash" and bring it with you.

23. Plant a tree.

24. Start a compost collection.

25. Find out where your food comes from. Find a store or restaurant that only uses locally grown/produced items. (And bring their address with you- share the information!!)

26. Ask a bar if they recycle their beer bottles. Document their response.

27. Take pictures of 5 LEED certified buildings. (Did you know that the new Nationals stadium is LEED certified???)

28. Find a newspaper/magazine article about something green- bring it with you.

29. Consider buying a biodiesel car. Tell us how you feel.

30. Make loooooove outside!

31. Go to Elevation Burger in Falls Church. (yummy organic, hormone-free yumminess!! owned by the same guy who owns EnviroCab in Arlington)

32. Attend GMU's Earth Fest on Saturday, April 19.
